Listen, I know it’s terrible luck to have an open umbrella inside. However, that is kinda my point. In my life, I have had some pretty bad luck. I’ve had to learn some valuable lessons. My favorite being; The grass is green where you water it.” This saying ties into my work, because rain is not always a bad thing. It waters the grass, but it can also destroy things. Ironically, if this umbrella got wet, it would be ruined. Which is basically my point. How you look at life is decided by your perspective. The Umbrella of Life is a fake shield from the rain. This sculpture is based on both the good, and the bad times in life.
If you look around at the photos and words I used on the umbrella, you can see they all have a purpose. I cut out sayings that stood out to me, such as; “Mad as Hell, High Anxiety, We Stand Against Hate and Find Love.” These words describe society as it is today. Humans have hate, anger, anxiety and love. It’s a part of life. Anxiety is something many people deal with. It is a struggle for most, a part of life. So is love and anger. The photographs included were ones that stood out to me. Some being characters from my childhood, strong women, or just powerful photographs. I was inspired by how I created collages as a child. Hence the title; The Umbrella of Life.
